Defiance
Defiance
This game has been created for the GMTK Game Jam 2019, with the theme "only one". Being defiant, I applied that theme backwards. What do games normally have only one of? And what happens if I remove that limitation. As it turns out this requires that there is only one of something else:
There is only one game.
"Of course this is only one game! What does that even mean?" That's for you to figure out. It is a puzzle game after all. This rule of only one game is enforced by the game's code, so don't even think about trying to circumvent it*.
There's also only one puzzle. Or at least only one challenging puzzle. To solve that one, you have to think outside of the box. You have to understand the game's rules and bend them for your own needs. You have to be defiant.
*) Actually, you should totally try that. After all, defiance is the name of the game.
Controls:
Movement: left & right buttons
Jump: space
Drop down: down button
Restart: F5
Notes:
- If the screen is too large, you can try zooming out (ctrl+- ).
- This game has been developed for Firefox. It might not function correctly in other browsers.
- There's a total of 7 levels. The game revolves around that last 7th level, for which the other 6 levels are preparation. The 7th level can only be solved if you really understand the gimmick of this game.
- Be careful of what you do in the last level. As it is possible to lock yourself out of completing the game. However, If you mess up - it will be very clear when you did - you can use the red link below the game with the text "[clear save data]" to completely start over.

This is so fun :)
So, you read the description and played the game for a bit. The mechanic seems pretty obvious: when you refresh, your previous avater remains in the level (but uncontrollable). Then you reach level 7, what a stupid game you think.
You proceed to read the comments for an explaination. Only hint being: "when you leave the this page, you lose control of your avatar". Ok, so I just press F5 and then hit cancel? Nope. Then it hits you, because you're a genius (or you're good at reading comprehension). What if instead of refreshing the page (leaving), I do that other option that I won't mention in order not to spoil the puzzle.
Ladies and gentlemen, though it looks like the art was made in paint and it is annoying that you have to play every level again when refreshing, it's a masterpiece.
I am so, so impressed. Awesome work, and a really amazing puzzle idea.
Worked fine on Chrome, incidentally.
